Monthly Mindset, February 2021: Commitment

Com ⋅ mit ⋅ ment: the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc.

Remember that goal you were going to set or follow through with last year? How ‘bout the shitty door handle on your fridge (looking at you, Barry) you said you would have taken care of? Even the homie you were going to reach out to for drinks, but couldn’t find the time???

Look, we all forget things, but what we do more frequently is not commit to what we said we were gonna do. I’m no stranger to this. I have a fear of commitment that transcends taking out the trash. It bleeds into my personal and professional life just as much. Sometimes I don’t want to commit to a MasterClass course in fear that it will consume too much time. Other times, I’ll stave something off until the absolute last minute, and by that time, I’ve watered down the activity or mission so much that I end up half-assing it. Bottom line, commitment is crucial to accomplishing our goals or crossing off items in the list. Without it, we fall into indecision or downright complacency. No scarier reality than staying consistently the same year over year with a crippling fear to commit to something different, yet desired.

February is all about commitment. It’s our opportunity to escape this New Year’s resolution façade and really put our minds to something we care about. Remove the microscope and you’re looking at lifetime goals or lofty aspirations that you could be working towards now but aren’t willing to commit to actualizing it. Throw out “I have to wait for the right moment” and be real about this.

Start off by asking yourself some simple questions (lol, they’re actually incredibly deep-thinkers and kept me up the entire night questioning my existence):

  • How important is _________to you?

  • Maybe it’s fitness, an intention, good grades, or a specific goal

  • Will your future-self feel regret or remorse if you DON’T commit to this?

  • Are you willing to do what it takes to commit?

  • What’s holding you back from diving in headfirst like a piss drunk middle-aged man named “Jonathan” from #BillsMafia?

Then put some action behind your words:

  • I will commit to _________, by _________.

I’ve created some sort of motivational Mad Libs cheeser. I have to visualize, so bear with me.

It’s a mindset article, so at this point, it’s time for me to break out the Kobe inspo. My man Kobe (RIP bean) had unrivaled commitment to his craft. He was willing to do whatever it takes to write his own story. I mean, Serena had a fucking kid and is competing at the highest level. What’s my excuse? I had too many tequila waters, and now I’m having an anxiety attack because I can’t find my CBD like it’s an inhaler all of a sudden? Get real, kid.

Keep in mind, this is just as much for me as it is for you. I need this. It helps guide my thinking, and for what it’s worth, I’m going commit to things as well. I’ll even lay them out, and you can HMU wherever & whenever to keep me accountable.

I will commit to: writing & creating, by setting daily reminders to jot down ideas, adhere to self-set deadlines, and continue to push the envelope with prospective guests for the pod.

In this together, folks. I’m committed. Are you?
